State Golf Association names new executive director

ROCKY HILL (Jan. 8, 1996) -- James E. Sweeney III has been named executive director of the Connecticut State Golf Association (CSGA), succeeding Russell C. Palmer who retired last month after 10 years of service.

Sweeney has been manager of regional affairs for the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the Northern Central Region of the country since 1991, serving as the liaison between the USGA and regional golf associations in nine states. His duties included volunteer recruitment, training and development of educational programs for superintendents, club managers, golf professionals and club officers. He also was involved in championship administration, membership development and promotion of USGA programs.

As a player, Sweeney participated in the 1981 and 1994 U.S. Amateur championships and the 1989 Mid-Amateur Championship. In 1994, he qualified for match play in the Amateur. He has won three club championships.

Sweeney served as executive director of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association, which encompasses New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas. He is a graduate of the University of New Mexico. He completed his secondary education at the Kent School in Kent, Conn.

Sweeney is only the fourth executive director of the CSGA since its inception in 1899. Previous directors were Robert G. Pryde, W.H. Neale and Palmer, who was appointed last month as an honorary member of the CSGA executive committee, the first such designation in the association's history.
