Tip 1: Custom-fit clubs
When you buy a new pair of shoes or a new suit, there's nothing more important than getting the right fit. The same is true when you buy a new set of clubs. Custom club-fitting involves two steps. First, there is the static, or non-static measurements. This involves measuring your hand size and your height. We also measure the distance from your wrist to the floor. Next comes the dynamic fitting, where we use the motion of your natural swing to fine-tune your specifications. By hitting shots off an impact mat, we can determine your exact lie angle, shaft length, shaft type, grip size and swing weight. During this process, we'll ask you a number of questions regarding your scoring range, typical shot patterns, divot pattern, physical limitations and how far you normally hit a five iron. We'll also ask you about your short and long term goals. It's a detailed process, but the results are worthwhile. You'll have a set of clubs that fits you to a tee.Jim Bedus is the head professional at Indian Hill Country Club, Newington, CT.
