Help Devon Quigley

By Bruce Berlet on February 15, 2012 10:06 PM
Rhode Island Dana Quigley is one of golf's -- and the world's -- really good guy who was dealt a mighty bad hand 21/2 months ago when his son Devon was critically injured in a car accident. Doctors worked overtime to save Devon's life, but he's still in a coma at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla.

When the accident occurred, Devon had no health insurance, so HelpHOPELive was established to help with his multitude of bills. Dana, who returned to the Champions Tour last weekend, has made a plea for help, and I'm delighted to publish his letter in hopes of helping the cause.

Dear Family and Friends,

Hello to all of the DEVOSTRONG fans. As many of you know, on November 30, 2011, Devon was in a car accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury and in a coma at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla. After being trapped in his car for a long time, Devon was at first given little chance of survival. For Devon, his friends and our family, life as we knew it changed in an instant.

The doctors and nurses at St. Mary's worked diligently to save Devon's life. But what really saved him was the fact that several weeks prior to the accident, Devon had accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and he and I were then baptized.

Over the past three months, Devon has made slow but steady progress that is impossible to ignore. Unfortunately, at the time of his accident, he did not have health insurance coverage. Moving forward Devon will have many uninsured injury-related expenses such as: hospital and doctor fees, medical equipment and long-tern rehab which will hopefully help advance his return to health.

To assist with Devon's uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive (formerly FTAF), a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Traumatic Brain Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only.

Devon has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign:

Thank You,

Dana Quigley

First Travelers entries

By Bruce Berlet on February 10, 2012 9:04 AM
The Travelers Championship got off to a good start Friday with the announcement of its first official commitments for the $6 million event.

Defending champion Fredrik Jacobson and former winners Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan are among the first five players to say they'll be at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell in mid-June.

Here's the release from the tournament:

HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 10, 2012 - Travelers Championship officials today announced five early commitments to this year's tournament. Previous winners of the Travelers Championship -- Fredrik Jacobson, Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan -- as well as Vijay Singh and Anthony Kim have officially committed to compete at TPC River Highlands, June 18 - 24.

"The commitment of these players sets the stage for another great field and outstanding competition in June," said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. "Many of the PGA TOUR's top players have expressed their interest in playing the Travelers Championship and we look forward to announcing additional commitments to our field in the near future."

Fredrik Jacobson, who will make his fifth appearance at the Travelers Championship, looks to defend his 2011 title. After capturing his first career victory on the PGA TOUR at the Travelers Championship in 2011, he was able to continue his success throughout the rest of the year. At the end of last year, he finished third in the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia followed by a runner-up finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions. Jacobson's victory at the 2011 Travelers Championship propelled him to his first ever appearance at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola and his best finish in the FedExCup and Money List Rankings at 29th and 26th respectively.

2010 champion Bubba Watson will make his sixth appearance at the Travelers Championship this June. After capturing his first career victory on the PGATOUR at the 2010 Travelers Championship, Watson added two wins in 2011 and helped the United States win the Presidents Cup in Australia. In his first three events to start 2012, Watson has earned three top-25 finishes, including a tie for fifth last week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He is currently 21st in the 2012 FedExCup regular season standings and 19th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

2007 champion Hunter Mahan is currently 21st in the Official World Golf Rankings and earned a tie for sixth in his 2012 PGA TOUR debut. Mahan had a strong season in 2011, which included a career best nine top-10 finishes and a seventh place finish in the final FedEx Cup standings. He also played in his third Presidents Cup for the United States and finished 4-1 to help secure the team victory. Mahan will be making his 11th appearance to TPC River Highlands this summer and currently holds the top spot for all-time money at the tournament with more than $2.3 million in earnings.

Vijay Singh will look to build on his past success at TPC River Highlands, as he will make his eighth appearance. The 48-year-old has 34 career victories on the PGA TOUR including three major championships, as well as winning the 2008 FedExCup.

Entering his sixth season on the PGA TOUR, Anthony Kim has three career victories, most recently at the 2010 Shell Houston Open. His best finish in2011 was a tie for fifth at The British Open, which was his third career top 10 in a major championship. Kim will be making his third trip to TPC River Highlands where his best finish was a T11 in 2009.

The Travelers Championship is the PGA TOUR's only early summer stop in the Northeast and will be held June 18 - 24, 2012, at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. Tournament tickets are on sale now at www.TravelersChampionship.com.

Sheary in Florida waiting

By Bruce Berlet on February 3, 2012 1:41 PM
West Hartford native Natalie Sheary has returned to an old stomping grounds to prepare for her first full season on the LPGA Futures Tour.

Sheary is living and practicing at the Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where she spent her senior year of high school with the golfing Lendl sisters and their tennis Hall of Fame dad, Ivan.

Sheary will be traveling the tour this year without her father, who also caddied for her in 2011, when she won $15,011 to finish 35th overall and sixth among rookies on the money list despite missing the first four events while completing her career at Wake Forest, where she was named the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Sheary recently went back to Wake Forest to receive the 2011 Edwin G. Wilson Student-Athlete of the Year award. This recipients of that award are selected by a vote of all Wake Forest head coaches and athletic department administrators. Sheary earned a 4.0 GPA in her final semester as well as the All- American honors. Well done, Ms. Sheary!!!!

Finishing 35th on the money list earned Sheary a spot in the LPGA Tour qualifying finals, where she was in the top 20 through two rounds but struggled the next 36 holes and missed the cut for the final round. But she is fully exempt for the 2012 Futures Tour, whenever that begins. Sheary and everyone else is still waiting for the LPGA to announce the Futures Tour schedule, but she has been told there unfortunately won't be another event in Connecticut at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield. Too bad considering all the great work that it did for breast cancer awareness.

If you want to keep tabs on Natalie, visit her new website at nataliesheary.com.
